Principality Auctions was established by Philip Malcolm in late 1991. The company name derives from the fact that Philip originates from the Principality of Wales and was living there when the decision to found the auction was taken. Philip was first introduced to the philatelic world at the age of five by his grandfather, who was a keen collector of France in particular. After selling his first auction lot aged just eleven Philip was employed as a full time auction describer prior to attending Bristol University from where he graduated with an Honours Degree in Law (LLB). After subsequently studying at the Inns of Court School of Law, Philip qualified as a barrister and was called to the Bar at Inner Temple in 1989. After practising law for a short period of time, Philip then worked as a freelance consultant in areas as diverse as politics and the horse racing industry before deciding to return to the philatelic world on a full time basis.
Initially based in Uxbridge, Principality Auctions expanded rapidly from a first sale of 819 lots in March 1992 to auctions in excess of 4,000 lots. In 2001 the business relocated to Ascot from where it continued to prosper for 14 years. In 2015 we took a "quality of life" decision and moved to the Northumberland coast from where we endeavour to continue to offer a wide range of quality material to our worldwide clientele with a particular emphasis on the British Empire. Offering interesting material in the finest of condition and accuracy of describing are key to our business ethos.
Despite the size of our auctions, the business is run solely by Philip & Kathryn Malcolm. Philip takes pride in describing every auction & Ebay lot personally so both vendor and purchaser alike are truly guaranteed a personal service with direct individual responsibilty taken for every item in the sale. Kathryn is responsible for the administration of the business and our internet and website activities, the latter being an area she quickly identified as a profitable avenue for further growth and development.
We pride ourselves on our service ethic and always encourage customers to contact us personally. We sincerely hope that dealing with Principality Auctions will prove an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all our clients.
